Marine Gel Technician

As a Marine Gel Technician, you will be responsible for the skilled application and maintenance of gel coatings on marine vessels. Your expertise in gel application techniques and knowledge of marine finishes will contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal and durability of our customers' boats. This role requires attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a strong understanding of gel application processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare boat surfaces for gel coating by cleaning, sanding, and applying appropriate primers.
  • Mix gelcoat materials and pigments to achieve desired colors and textures.
  • Apply gelcoat using spray guns, brushes, or rollers, ensuring even coverage and smooth finishes.
  • Repair and touch up damaged gel coats, matching colors and textures to the existing surface.
  • Perform quality inspections to identify imperfections, such as air bubbles or uneven finishes, and rectify them promptly.
  • Follow safety protocols and guidelines for handling chemicals, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Maintain and clean equipment, including spray guns, brushes, and mixing tools, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with other team members, such as boat repair technicians or boatyard personnel, to coordinate workflow and prioritize projects.
  • Keep accurate records of materials used, time spent on each project, and any additional notes or observations.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, new gelcoat products, and techniques through continuous learning and professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Marine Gel Technician or in a similar role within the marine industry.
  • Thorough understanding of gelcoat application techniques, including mixing ratios, surface preparation, and finishing processes.
  • Proficient in color matching and blending gelcoat pigments.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality finishes with minimal errors.
  • Knowledge of different gelcoat materials and their applications for various boat surfaces.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise application and repair work.
  • Basic knowledge of boat construction and materials.
  • Familiarity with safety practices and protocols when working with chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with team members and customers.
