REFINISHING TECHNICIAN

The Opportunity:

Maple Leaf Marinas (MLM) is the largest owner and operator of marinas, marine resorts, and boat dealerships in Canada.  MLM’s marina network comprises 19 locations throughout the Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay, Muskoka, and Parry Sound Regions.   

MLM is seeking experienced gel/ refinishing technicians to join our growing company.  This is a full-time permanent position that offers competitive pay (based on experience level), health benefits and enrolment in our Group RRSP Plan.  We offer continuous training and skill building opportunities. 

Job Description:

The Refinishing Technician will construct, fit-out and repair marine vessels from small recreational watercraft to larger vessels. Technicians prepare wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting, and paints parts, equipment, interior and exterior of vessels utilizing brushes, spray guns and rollers. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repair damage to fiberglass and carbon fiber boat hulls and other parts
  • Understand general boatbuilding principles and concepts
  • Experience working with epoxy pre-peg laminating, vacuum consolidated wet laminating and vacuum infusion techniques along with an understanding in mold construction
  • Surface preparation to include stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming surfaces
  • Repair and fabricate boat parts using fiberglass, resin, and other composite materials
  • Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer, as appropriate, to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boats
  • Utilize hand and power tools including but not limited to; scraper, wire brush, needle gun, grinder, pneumatic chipper, basic tools, sandpaper, etc.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for varnish prepping and sealing and the products utilized
  • Ability to match and spray gel coat
  • Other duties as assigned by Management

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with paint work, auto body repair, and fiberglass repair
  • Previous experience with gelcoat and painted surfaces
  • Basic boat handling skills preferred
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
